Cysto/Ureteroscopy

Cystoscopy is a visual inspection of the bladder performed using a cystoscope inserted through the urethra. The urethra is the tube that carries urine from the bladder to the outside of the body. The cystoscope has lenses like a telescope or microscope. These lenses let the Urologist focus on the inner surfaces of the urinary tract.

• The procedure can be done alone or in conjunction with an ESWL.
• You will receive anesthesia during your procedure.

Ureteroscopy is a visual inspection of the upper urinary tract performed with a fiberoptic ureteroscope. The ureteroscope is passed through the urethra, bladder, and then directly into the ureter. The ureteroscope has lenses like a telescope or microscope. These lenses let the Urologist focus on the inner surfaces of the urinary tract.

• The procedure can be done alone or in conjunction with a Laser Lithotripsy.
• You will receive anesthesia during your procedure.

A ureteral stent is a thin flexible tube inserted into the ureter to prevent or treat obstruction of the urine flow from the kidney. The stent is inserted with the aid of a cystoscope. Ureteral stents are used to ensure the patency of a ureter, which may be compromised, for example, by a kidney stone. This method is sometimes used as a temporary measure, to prevent damage to a blocked kidney, until a procedure to remove the stone can be performed. Stents may also be placed in a ureter to facilitate healing after an ureteroscopic procedure.
